A Letter to you from…

My Dear Comrades,

… When one dies in the arms of a grateful country Agony ends, prison chains break – and At last, with death, life begins!

“I think that a man should not live beyond the age when he begins to deteriorate, when the flame that lighted the brightest moment of his life has weakened.” And it has come to a point for me to leave the stage now. I’ve been loved and hated. I’ve been given respect and insulted. But my people have loved me dearly and supported me throughout. I am who I am because of my ideologies and what I think is correct.

I’ve brought Cuba to a place no one else ever did. Healthcare, education, literacy rate, jobs, self-employment were improved. The poor and the middle class were given rights and uplifted. This is all because of theory and logic of Karl Marx. I learnt law while in University of Havana and I was exposed to Cuban nationalism, anti-imperialism and socialism.

“Someday, the capitalist system will disappear in the United States, because no social class system has been eternal. One day, class societies will disappear.” Well people are egoistic, that’s the truth. That’s why they need class and all hierarchical status in the society; to caress their egos and hold their selfishness high up. Some choose parties without even knowing the concepts behind them. Everyone’s being moulded in to different states of mind. Democracy is important I agree, but how good is democracy when the nation who elects the rulers is unintellectual and unknowledgeable about the world? No it’s not about having a degree in economics and being so sound in all the rubbish and theory, it’s about common sense and knowing what’s good for the country. Not how much they bribe you with or the kind words uttered or how much they promise to give you. Start looking around you, know what’s happening; have an opinion for yourself and don’t be moulded in to what you are not and what you don’t feel is right. Sometimes a nation needs better control than free will until they learn what’s best. Because when the wealthy take the upper hand to caress their little egos and show off what they’ve got, the poor suffer and slave all day long. Cuba used to import more Cadillacs than any other country in the word, for the wealthy class and for the U.S. elites who vacationed and lived in Cuba. But you know what we needed?? We needed tractors! To build up our economy and for the people who are deprived of simple rights.

“I find capitalism repugnant. It is filthy, it is gross and it is alienating… because it causes war, hypocrisy and competition.” Wealth creates competition. Equality gives people everything they need but do not have classes in society. I haven’t deprived my people of comfort; I always thought the wellbeing of them. They’ve got many concessions and reliefs and we’ve developed ourselves a whole lot. The farmers have been uplifted and given promotion and we depend on them. They earn quite well. Of course capitalism focuses on private sector where the profit is not for the state, so how does a state develop to help the less privileged? Capitalism is not good for a developing country; it does not balance the nation’s needs. Some need Cadillacs while others need food? How ironical is this state, where we say we are developing but all we do is look in to the needs of the wealthy? How equal is this? And if this is what democracy is, well think twice whether it’s democratic in its true form!

“I am a Marxist Leninist and I will be one until the last day of my life. I became a Communist by studying capitalist political economy, and when I had some understanding of that problem, it actually seemed to me so absurd, so irrational and so inhuman, that I simply began to elaborate on my own formulas for production and distribution.” There is a slight difference of being a socialist and a communist. The factors of production are owned by everyone, the production is valued for its usefulness to people, allocation of production is decided by a central plan and it is allocated according to each person’s ability; this is the same for communism and socialism. But the difference is we socialists provide according to their contribution and communists provide for the need. You see it’s a slight difference and who is to say what is right and what is wrong. What I think is equality is to get the fair share by contributing to the economy. I think a developing state needs this. Because 820 million people in this world are hungry and 790 million of them are from the third world countries. It’s disappointing because the farce of capitalism has engulfed the uneducated and unintelligent who bows down to all rubbish talks. Not knowing that they vote for their own doom.

What I would wish that all of you would understand is the truth. Wealthy or poor, doesn’t matter. Drop down your egos, vote for what’s best for the country and not what’s best for your own egos and greediness. Help the less privileged, because to develop a nation we need commitment. No one’s yet committed are they? There’s a limit you can cheat and steal and lie to all around you, what you do will come back to you. Strive for equality, make them around you knowledgeable and show them what’s best for them. Extremes of anything are not good for anyone, it requires balance.

“Every country must be absolutely free to adopt the type of economic, political and social system that it considers convenient.” And just like that choose your side and be independent of influence. It seems as though money controls the world, there is yet time; to give a chance to humanity.

And with death I begin my life at eternity.

Forever in peace,
Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz
